About the Shoals

There’s something different about this place. That’s why Shoals United, an extension of the Shoals Chamber of Commerce, was created… To help spread the word about this beautiful area we call the Shoals. Maybe it’s the location along the banks of the Tennessee River, called the “Singing River” by the natives who lived here centuries ago that makes it special. Maybe it’s our rich creative spirit, which gave birth to Muscle Shoals Music, W.C. Handy’s blues, Helen Keller’s courageous spirit, and a community rich with arts, performance, fashion and soul. There’s something different about this place — and that makes it a wonderful place to visit, and an even better place to live.

We’re four cities – Florence, Muscle Shoals, Sheffield and Tuscumbia, and 9 townships – woven together into this place called the ”Shoals”. We’re a university town – a medical center – an arts hub. We’re one of the safest places in the country, where neighbors speak and smile; our airport, highway systems and river make us a transportation center. Education is a priority here – we’re home to the University of North Alabama and Northwest Shoals Community College, and we even have Shoals Scholar Dollars, a community foundation to assist qualified students in the Shoals can receive education beyond high school. The cost of living is low, but the quality of life here is high. This is a different place, and a special place. We are The Shoals.

Four distinct but gentle seasons and a wealth of outdoor activities, from championship golf to sailing, fishing and other water sports, make this a recreational dream. We’re also a foodie lovers paradise, and we’ve been practicing “farm to table” long before it became a buzzword. You really should come and visit — you might just want to make The Shoals your home!
